Trump promises to abolish “very costly” daylight saving time

US President-elect Donald Trump has said he wants to abolish Daylight Saving Time (DST), arguing that it is “inconvenient” and “very costly” for Americans.

Daylight saving time moves the clock forward one hour in spring and back one hour in fall to make better use of natural daylight.

According to the Pew Research Center, it is observed in a third of the world’s countries, including most of Europe.

But some in the U.S. have long advocated for an end to the practice, arguing that it would lead to brighter afternoons and more economic activity.

In a post on his Truth Social platform on Friday, Trump said DST has “a small but powerful constituency, but it shouldn’t be.”

He said his Republican Party would work to end it.

It’s not the first attempt to change the practice of changing clocks seasonally in the United States.

In 2022, the Democratic-controlled Senate passed a bill that would have required the U.S. to permanently switch to daylight saving time to take advantage of brighter evenings, particularly for those commuting from work or school.

But the Sunshine Protection Act, introduced by Republican Sen. Marco Rubio, never made it to President Joe Biden’s desk.

Rubio, who has since been handpicked by Trump for the role of secretary of state under his new administration, said at the time that studies had shown permanent daylight saving time could benefit the economy.
