Trump proposes making Canada 51st country after Trudeau said tariffs would destroy economy: sources

President-elect Trump suggested to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau last week that if a tariff would devastate its neighbor to the north’s economy because of its failure to address trade and immigration issues, it should perhaps become the 51st nation, sources told Fox News .

Last Friday, Trudeau flew unannounced to Mar-a-Lago after Trump threatened to impose sweeping tariffs on Canadian products. Specifically, Trump is threatening to impose 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico for failing to stem the flow of illegal immigrants and illegal drugs from those countries into the United States

Now new details are emerging about the meeting between the two men, which Trump described as “very productive.”

Before nibbling shrimp cocktail and slurping oysters, the topics of tariffs, border security and trade deficits took center stage.

According to two people at the table who heard the discussion, while Trump was warm and welcoming, he was very direct when it came to what he wanted from his northern counterpart.

To paraphrase the discussion, Trump told Trudeau that Canada had missed the U.S. border by allowing large amounts of drugs and people across the border, including illegal immigrants from over 70 different countries.

Sources say Trump became more animated when discussing the U.S. trade deficit with Canada, which he estimated at more than $100 billion.

The president-elect told the prime minister that if Canada cannot resolve border issues and the trade deficit, he will impose a 25% tariff on all Canadian goods on his first day back in office.

Trudeau told Trump he couldn’t raise the tariff because it would completely destroy the Canadian economy. Trump responded and asked: So your country can’t survive unless it rips off the US to the tune of $100 billion?

Trump then suggested that Trudeau make Canada the 51st nation, causing the prime minister and others to laugh nervously, sources told Fox News.

But he continued, telling Trudeau that prime minister was a better title, although he could still be governor of the 51st state.

Sources told Fox News that someone at the table intervened and told Trump that Canada would be a very liberal state, which caused even more laughter. Trump suggested that Canada could potentially become two states: one conservative and one liberal.

He told Trudeau that if he couldn’t handle his list of demands without ripping off the U.S. on trade, then maybe Canada really should become one or two states and Trudeau could become governor.

While sources say the exchange elicited much laughter, Trump conveyed the message that he expected changes by January 20.

The nearly three-hour conversation continued on various other topics, and at the end the Canadian guests described the dinner as “very friendly and very positive,” although no reference was made to affiliation with the 51st state.

Fox News Digital reached out to both the Trump camp and Trudeau’s team about the statements, although neither immediately responded.
