Trump swears in countries on federal holiday, what you should know

President-elect Donald Trump’s second term begins in January, not long after other elected officials assume their duties earlier in the year. This year, the swearing-in will take place on a federal holiday due to the overlap of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the presidential inauguration.

This is the first time this century that a president has been inaugurated on this holiday, but it has happened before.

Here’s why and when President Donald Trump’s second term begins.

When is Donald Trump’s inauguration?

President-elect Donald Trump will be sworn in on January 20, 2025 in Washington, DC. There, Donald Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance will take the oath of office on Capitol Hill.

Traditionally, VancHe will be sworn in first, and Trump will take the presidential oath around 11 a.m. CT.

Can I purchase tickets for the inauguration?

The Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies is selling a limited number of inaugural tickets to the public through members of Congress. Tickets are free and allow you to watch the proceedings from the U.S. Capitol.

Tickets are available from your congressman in the weeks leading up to the inauguration.

When do elected officials begin their terms?

The term of office of congressional officers begins on Friday, January 3, 2025. This is established by constitutional law.

When does Donald Trump’s cabinet begin?

According to the Center for Presidential Transition, Senate-confirmed appointees are considered after an official nomination. The vetting process will continue until they are officially announced or assume their positions alongside Donald Trump on January 20, 2025.

Why is Trump sworn in on MLK Day?

Donald Trump’s second inauguration on January 20th follows the constitutional law that all presidential inaugurations will take place on January 20th of the year immediately following the election. This will not be the case if January 20th falls on a Sunday, which is moved to Monday January 21st.

Since MLK Day is always celebrated on the third Monday in January, while the presidential inauguration occurs every four years, the two days coincided only a few times.

Which Presidents Were Inaugurated on MLK Day?

Donald Trump is the third president to be inaugurated on Martin Luther King Jr. Day since its inauguration in 1986. Since then, only Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama have taken the oath of office on the holiday, both at their second inaugurations – Clinton in 1997 and Obama in 2013.

Obama’s second term officially began on January 21, 2013, as January 20 fell on a Sunday that year and was therefore constitutionally prohibited.

This is the first presidential transfer of power on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, as President Joe Biden leaves office on the same day Trump begins his term.
