Trump talks about his transition and election victory as he receives the Fox Nation Award

GREENVALE, N.Y. (AP) — Not even in office yet, Donald Trump said Thursday he has already accomplished more than President Joe Biden in his entire term, an outsized claim from the president-elect just a month before the election.

Trump, who has largely stayed at his Mar-a-Lago club in recent weeks as he works to staff his new administration, made the remark as he headed to New York’s Long Island to attend the To be honored at Fox Nation’s annual Patriot Awards, Fox’s streaming platform.

“I think more has happened in the last two weeks than in the last four years,” Trump told the crowd at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts.

“It was a great day, a great night,” he said, recalling his victory in a 10-minute acceptance speech that sounded like a highlight of his campaign speeches. It was capped off by a live performance of “God Bless the USA” by singer Lee Greenwood, calls to “get the criminals out of our country” and an embrace of ballots and mandatory voter ID.

Trump also pointed to conversations he has had with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum since threatening two of the country’s top trading partners with a 25% tariff on all imported goods unless they are no longer illegal Undertake border crossings and drug flows.

“Justin flew right in,” Trump said, referring to Trudeau’s trip to Mar-a-Lago. This prompted some in the audience to shout “51!” – a reference to Trump apparently joking at his dinner with Trudeau that Canada could become the 51st US state.

The annual awards “honor and recognize America’s finest patriots, including military veterans, first responders and other inspiring everyday heroes,” Fox said. The event was hosted by Fox host Sean Hannity, a longtime friend of Trump’s who stepped in after the president-elect named Pete Hegseth, the original host, as defense secretary.

Thursday night’s honorees included conservative actor and evangelist Kirk Cameron; General Dick Cody, who used his own helicopter to deliver relief supplies to people after Hurricane Helene; and Jonathan Diller, the New York City police officer killed during a traffic stop in Queens. His widow Stephanie received a standing ovation and thanked Trump for his support. Others also referred to Trump.

Also honored at the ceremony was Paws of War, an organization that provides service dogs to veterans and helps those serving overseas bring animals they meet in war zones to the United States. One such reunion took place on stage.

The heartfelt moments were offset by the kind of boisterous red-meat politics that loyal observers have come to expect from Fox hosts like Hannity.

The host used his introduction to do a victory lap, boasting that Democrats “got their asses kicked.” He played “YMCA” — the song Trump has long used to close his rallies — and urged audience members to dance like the president. And he delivered a series of impressions in which he mimicked former vice presidential candidate Tim Walz’s enthusiasm and Biden’s forlorn impression, complete with the backdrop of the rainforest where he spoke during a recent trip to the Amazon.

He later donned an orange safety vest – a reference to the one Trump wore when he held a news conference from a garbage truck during the campaign after Biden suggested that Trump’s supporters were trash.

Trump’s award marks the culmination of Fox’s renewed acceptance of the president-elect, whose relationship with the network has been rocky in recent years.

Fox paid $787 million in 2023 to settle a defamation lawsuit by Dominion Voting Systems over false claims by Fox personalities who repeated Trump’s lies that the 2020 election was stolen from him through mass voter fraud. For more than six months, until spring 2023, Fox imposed what many called a “soft ban” on Trump appearances, and its executives tried to continue with it. But when it became clear that voters didn’t want that, Fox and its personalities quickly welcomed Trump back.

Individual figures have had their own journeys: Former Fox host Megyn Kelly drew Trump’s ire in a 2015 debate for asking tough questions about his treatment of women; Today she is a popular podcast host and Trump supporter. The Dominion lawsuit uncovered emails in which former Fox host Tucker Carlson made disparaging comments about Trump, including saying he “really can’t wait” for Trump to become ex-president. They have since made amends.

Despite all of this, Trump has been quick to take to social media to criticize Fox for content he believes is not loyal enough.

On Thursday he was more generous.

“They have incredible people at Fox,” he said, before quipping, “A few I don’t like.”

Trump has been increasingly in the public eye since spending most of his transition so far behind closed doors at his club in Palm Beach, Florida. This week he made an unannounced appearance at a memorial service for three Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office deputies who died in a car accident last month.

This weekend he will travel to Paris to join other leaders and dignitaries in a ceremony celebrating the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral, which was destroyed by fire five years ago.
