Donald Trump’s nominee for defense secretary, former Fox News weekend host Pete Hegseth, continues to be dogged by allegations about his past, potentially making his confirmation less likely.

Hegseth answered questions from the House Republican Study Committee on Wednesday, met with senators and promised new Senate Armed Services Chairman Roger Wicker that he wouldn’t drink alcohol if confirmed.

His mother Penelope appeared on his former network earlier in the day to defend him after previously criticizing her son’s behavior towards women in a letter.

The Trump transition team is reportedly considering alternatives to lead the Pentagon, including Senator Joni Ernst and, more surprisingly, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

Meanwhile, Sheriff Chad Chronister, Trump’s nominee for Drug Enforcement Administration administrator, withdrew from consideration, although the president-elect has since said he withdrew the nomination because of comments he made to pastors.

In another flurry of appointments, Trump asked his former trade adviser Peter Navarro to return in a similar role for his new administration.

He also chose a new NASA administrator, Army secretary and chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission.

“He also recognizes that digital assets and other innovations are critical to making America greater than ever before.”
