President-elect Donald Trump has said he wants to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to a more American name.

Trump was speaking at a news conference at Mar-a-Lago on Tuesday when he made the remark.

“We are going to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring,” Trump said. “That covers a lot of territory. The Gulf of America, what a beautiful name. And it’s appropriate.”

The Republican said his administration would make the official announcement “very soon at a later date.”

“Because we do most of the work there and it’s ours,” he said.

“Mexico is really in trouble. Lots of trouble. “It’s a very dangerous place,” Trump said.

The president-elect said the country must “stop pouring millions of people into the United States” and repeated his threats to impose tariffs on Mexico and Canada.

“And we’re going to impose very high tariffs on Mexico and Canada because Canada … they’re also coming through Canada and the number of drugs coming through is at record levels,” Trump said, without citing figures or evidence.

Florida, Alabama, Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi have a coastline along the Gulf of Mexico.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has not publicly responded to Trump’s announcement but has spoken to him about the tariff threats in recent months.

During the impromptu press conference, Trump also declined to rule out using the military to recapture the Panama Canal and take over Greenland.

In response to a reporter’s question, Trump replied: “I’m not going to commit to that.” You may need to do something.”

Last month, Trump accused Panama of “ripping off” American ships by charging “exorbitant prices” to use the vital waterway that serves as a shortcut between the Atlantic and Pacific.

Changing the name of the Gulf and reclaiming the canal are not the only world plans Trump has in mind. His eldest son Donald Trump Jr. was sent on a visit to Greenland after the president-elect expressed interest in acquiring the autonomous Arctic territory from Denmark.

The new commander in chief initially followed the visit on his Truth Social platform on Monday evening with a post: “I heard that the people of Greenland are ‘MAGA’.”

“My son Don Jr. and various representatives will travel there to visit some of the most beautiful areas and attractions.”
