Trump’s press secretary explains the first day’s priorities

President-elect Donald Trump laid out his plan for America in his first news conference since winning the election on Monday, talking tariffs, regulations, Iran, vaccines, TikTok and more.

Trump’s incoming White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, says he will implement his “America First” economic agenda on day one. She says Trump will use executive action to limit regulation, unlock America’s energy independence and use U.S. authority to negotiate good deals for Americans.

You’ve already seen him do that as president-elect,” Leavitt said. “You saw Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, making statements about tariffs, fly to Mar-a-Lago just minutes after President Trump made that statement.

Tax relief is Trump’s top priority, according to Leavitt, but that change still needs to get through Congress.

“We have the Senate, we have the House and we are confident that President Trump can once again sign the largest tax cut in history, as he did in his first term,” she said.

At his press conference on Monday, Trump announced a $100 billion investment in artificial intelligence in the US over the four years of his presidency alongside SoftBank Group CEO Masayoshi Son. This investment brings both capital and new jobs to the United States.

“Critical infrastructure in AI, which of course is the future,” Leavitt said. “We need to make sure we build that future here at home and hire American workers to do it. And that was part of yesterday’s promise: that the CEO of SoftBank would hire 100,000 American workers.”

During the press conference, Trump began negotiating for Masayoshi to double down and hire 200,000 American workers.

“I bet President Trump will get what he wants when it comes to that promise,” Leavitt said.

Trump also said federal employees who do not return to in-person work could be fired, but some experts said the collective bargaining agreement reached with the Biden-Harris administration on access to remote work was binding.

“Things are going to change in Washington DC,” Leavitt said. “The American people are tired of seeing bureaucrats in Washington who don’t even show up for work and live on their taxpayer-funded salaries.”

To reduce the large and burdensome government burden and streamline federal work, Trump created the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

“It will be an outside organization that consults with the government and advises them on ways to reduce waste,” Leavitt said. “One of them is eliminating this huge federal workforce or, I should say, significantly reducing it, and that is of course led by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy.”

Trump’s inauguration will take place on January 20th and then he will begin implementing his plans. Until then, however, President Joe Biden is still in office.

Biden has begun selling unused portions of Trump’s border wall in the lame-duck session of his presidency.

“Resuming border wall construction is President Trump’s top priority, and it is despicable that current Commander-in-Chief Joe Biden has sold very useful material that he knows President Trump will want to use for pennies.” per dollar,” Leavitt said.

The border wall was specifically designed by Customs and Border Protection officials to prevent illegal border crossings.

“We have seen an increase of more than 20 million illegal people in the last four years,” she said. “It is destroying our infrastructure in our inner cities, it has led to an increase in migrant violent crime across the country, and it is unacceptable for current President Joe Biden to do this.”

Leavitt says Trump will also begin border protection and mass deportations on day one.

“The way to do this is to empower federal and local law enforcement to work together to identify the criminals in our American communities and send them home,” she said.

Beyond domestic policy, Trump will need to focus on foreign relations amid unrest in the Middle East and the war in Ukraine.

According to Leavitt, Trump is determined to end the billions in taxes flowing to Ukraine.

“Taxpayers are tired of funding this war, many people have died on both sides,” she said. “I think all Americans agree that we want peace around the world, and President Trump was a peacemaker in his first term and he will continue to be a peacemaker in his second term.”

According to Leavitt, Trump will also stand up for Israel and “not bend the knee to far-left activists who are terrorist sympathizers.”

She says the Biden administration has done this on U.S. college campuses and abroad with the Iranian regime.

“President Trump will be tough on Iran, he is currently working with his team to bring these hostages home,” Leavitt said. “As you heard him say yesterday, ‘All hell will break loose if Iran doesn’t heed these warnings.'”

And the future of TikTok?

According to the current plan, parent company ByteDance has until January to separate from the company. TikTok’s CEO has already met with Trump since his election.

“He loves TikTok, it has a special place in his heart,” Leavitt said. “He will find a common solution.”
