Tuesday Storm: Strong Wind Warning for South Pasadena and Greater Los Angeles | The South Pasadenan

The South Pasadenan News report: Storm Tuesday-Wednesday

The National Weather Service has issued one Strong wind warning for portions of Los Angeles County, including the San Gabriel Valley, Santa Clarita Valley, San Fernando Valley and the eastern Santa Monica Mountains. The warning applies 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 7th to 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 8th.

South Pasadena Mayor Janet Braun met with Councilmember Omari Ferguson: “SP Fire Chief Lloyd and SP Police Chief Solinsky have met regarding the impending storm and have services ready…South Pasadena’s ‘EOC’ is not yet fully activated . and that will be determined on Tuesday if necessary.”

What is the South Pasadena “EOC”? Emergency Operations Center

“The EOC is located within the City of South Pasadena Fire Department. It is the central command for major events, emergencies or disasters in South Pasadena. The command areas are divided into five sections based on the Standard Emergency Management Systems (SEMS) and the National Incident Management System (NIMS). Management, operations, planning, logistics and finance. The departments are staffed by senior staff from the City of South Pasadena and partner agencies.”

“The City of South Pasadena is a member of Disaster protection area Ca partnership between Los Angeles County and ten local cities to promote coordination of disaster management, planning and preparedness efforts.”

What to expect:

  • Wind speeds: North to northeast winds will vary between 30 and 50 mph, with gusts generally expected at 60 to 80 mph. Some isolated gusts may reach staggering speeds of 100 miles per hour in higher elevations and exposed areas.
  • Affected areas: Communities such as Pasadena, South Pasadena, Glendale, La Cañada Flintridge, Sunland, Santa Clarita, Burbank, Chatsworth and surrounding areas. Hazardous conditions may occur along major travel routes, including the Interstate 5 Corridor near Gorman and Pyramid Lake.

Possible effects:

  • Widespread damage: The strong winds are likely to down trees and power lines, causing possible power outages across the region.
  • Travel disruptions: Driving conditions become dangerous, especially for high-profile vehicles on exposed roads.
  • Public Safety: The high wind speeds could pose risks to outdoor activities and infrastructure.

How to prepare:

  1. Secure loose items: Tie down or move patio furniture, trash cans, and other loose items.
  2. Avoid traveling: Postpone unnecessary trips during the warning period, especially in wind-prone areas.
  3. Charging electronics: Make sure all important devices, including phones and power banks, are fully charged.
  4. Prepare emergency supplies: Fill gas tanks, prepare generators, and check flashlights and batteries.
  5. Park safely: Avoid parking under trees or near loose objects that could become projectiles.

As winds increase, residents are urged to do so stay inside Avoid windows and trees that could fall during peak gusts.
