Twister races through North Katy: houses destroyed, vehicles overturned

KATY, Texas — Several homes in Windward’s North Katy neighborhood are no longer livable after a tornado struck the community Saturday.

Several houses have parts of their roofs completely missing, others have windows broken and vehicles overturned.

WEATHER: After a week of storms, sunshine returns to Houston on Sunday

The newer community is located just off FM 529 north of Katy.

On Saturday afternoon, the National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for a storm system moving through the area.

People who live in the neighborhood remember receiving the emergency alert on their cellphones minutes before the storm hit their community.

“We just got the tornado warning on my phone five minutes before,” saidTipps Rancit.

Cell phone video from the community shows the funnel cloud sinking to the ground and sending debris into the air.

“I just stood there and looked at it,” Teresa Nguyen said. “I felt the wind and the rain outside and the power went out a few times.”

The tornado was over just as quickly as it began, lasting less than a minute, according to neighbors.

Nguyen’s garage door was ripped down. Her house was spared the worst of the damage. As is Rancit’s home.

A few houses away from their two homes, several homes had their roofs torn off, and the walls of the homes were peeling away, revealing bedrooms and overturned vehicles.

“I was sleeping,” Toby Azemohor said. “Suddenly I heard the rain and realized it was just pelting outside in the rain! Bamp! Bamp! Bamp! Bamp! When I came out, it was turned around.”

Despite all the damage, somehow not a single person was hurt.

The houses most affected by the storm were empty. Mother Nature chose these houses, but a higher power seemed to have ensured they were empty.

“Thank God. I was a little scared when I saw the fire truck come through,” Nguyen said.

“Everyone is OK,” Rancit added. “That’s the most important thing.”

The tornado was not officially confirmed by the National Weather Service. A survey team will likely travel to the area to confirm the storm and provide an assessment.
