Six other people were injured. Two of them are in critical condition while the other four, a teacher and three students, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Two of the four survivors were released from the hospital.

Madison police had previously incorrectly said five people were killed and five were injured.

Roads around the 4900 block of Buckeye Road will be closed due to a law enforcement investigation.

Parents and students met at the SSM Health building at the intersection of East Buckeye Road and Stoughton Road.

“It’s a little shocking. On TV you always see it happening somewhere else,” said Guy Nelson, who lives near the school. “You know, you feel bad, but you don’t notice the situation when it’s here at your back. It’s basically a block away from me. So it’s my backyard and it’s very scary.”
