Two U.S. Navy pilots were able to eject safely after their fighter jet was shot down in an apparent friendly-fire incident over the Red Sea on Saturday, U.S. Central Command said in a statement.

The pilots were rescued, and one of the crew members was initially estimated to have suffered minor injuries.

The aircraft, an F/A-18, was operating from the USS Harry S. Truman when it was “mistakenly” fired upon by the USS Gettysburg, CENTCOM said. The USS Gettysburg, a Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser, is part of the Truman Carrier Strike Group that entered Middle Eastern waters a week ago.

A comprehensive investigation is underway. CENTCOM emphasized that the incident was not the result of enemy fire. Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi militant group has repeatedly made false claims that it has attacked U.S. warships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.

The U.S. has maintained a near-constant presence of large Navy warships in the region since the start of the war in Gaza as the Houthis have attacked ships in the Red Sea, one of the world’s busiest waterways, calling the attacks a response to Israel’s war against Hamas.

The apparent friendly-fire incident occurred on the same day that the U.S. carried out airstrikes against Houthi targets in Yemen, hitting a missile storage facility and a command and control facility in the capital Sanaa. The U.S. also shot down disposable attack drones and an anti-ship cruise missile, according to CENTCOM.

The attacks on the Iran-backed rebel group used Navy F/A-18 fighter jets and U.S. Air Force assets, CENTCOM said.

According to two US military officials, the downed fighter jet was not part of the attacks in Yemen.

The Houthis, who control Yemen’s most populous regions, say they will not stop attacking Israel and its allies until a ceasefire is reached in Gaza.

The F/A-18 incident also occurred on the same day that Houthi forces in Yemen said they fired a hypersonic missile at an Israeli military target in Tel Aviv’s Jaffa district. The rocket fired from Yemen arrived in Tel Aviv on Saturday night, Israeli authorities said. This was a rare case of a failed interception attack over the city.

According to emergency services, more than a dozen people suffered minor injuries, but no deaths were reported.
