Oufielder Tyler O’Neill and the Orioles have agreed to a three-year, $49.5 million deal, a source told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand. The team has not confirmed the deal, which includes an exit possibility after 2025 and is awaiting a physical completion.

O’Neill has had an inconsistent career, battling nagging injuries and inconsistent performances from year to year. The 29-year-old has never played 140 games in a season in the last seven years in the MLB and peaked at 138 games in his breakout 2021 season, in which he hit 34 homers and had an OPS of .912 (148 OPS+ ) reached a value of .286.

After being traded from the Cardinals to the Red Sox in December 2023, injuries remained an issue for O’Neill in 2024. He missed playing time due to a concussion, right knee inflammation and left leg infection, playing in only 113 games.

The right-handed hitter also posted a .693 OPS against same-sided pitching (1.179 against lefties) with an overall strikeout rate of 33.6%.

But despite all that, O’Neill delivered one of his best seasons, ranking in the 98th percentile in barrel rate (17.3%) and hitting 31 home runs with an OPS of .847 (132 OPS+) in 473 plate appearances.

O’Neill’s performance for Boston in 2024 was a significant improvement over the numbers he posted in his final two years with St. Louis, in which he went on the injured list five times and hit just .229 with 23 home runs and a .707 hit OPS (97 OPS+) over 168 games. He will enter 2025 with a career 116 OPS+ and 590 games in the majors.
