UConn looks to get Maui back on track against Gonzaga

The first Saturday in months without a full slate of college football games is here. But fear not: one of the best college basketball days of the year will take place in its place. It’s a packed day of competition with some key rivalry games, top teams on tour and major brands competing in exciting early-season showdowns.

Which games should you keep an eye on? Here’s a look at the best games of the day on Saturday and what to look out for in these high-profile encounters.

UConn is still undefeated in the continental United States and has rebounded well Total system failure on Maui with wins last week over Baylor and Texas. The Huskies can make Maui look more like a bad week if they can beat Gonzaga in what UConn fans call the “Storrs South.” Gonzaga’s dynamic offense, particularly Graham Ike’s dominant post presence, could pose problems for a UConn team that has struggled on that end of the floor and lacks frontcourt depth. But the Bulldogs have shown cracks in recent weeks, collapsing in the second half against Kentucky last week and blowing another lead at Atlantis against West Virginia.

The no. 1 Volunteers are not only undefeated, but also untested. In five games against top-tier opponents, Tennessee has won by an average of 19.6 points, even though all but one of the games were played on the road. In theory, Illinois represents its biggest challenge yet, particularly in what was supposed to be a rockin’ State Farm Center in Champaign. The Illini have one of the best players in the country in freshman point guard Kasparas Jakučionis and plenty of three-point shooting, an interesting matchup for a Tennessee defense that encourages opponents to shoot from distance. The other storyline to watch is whether Tennessee star guard Chaz Lanier can continue his remarkable start to the season. If he can do that, it will help the Vols retain the No. 1 spot in the polls for another week.

You couldn’t have imagined a better start to the Mark Pope era in Lexington, with the Wildcats going 9-1 and neutral-field wins over Duke and Gonzaga in the first six weeks of his tenure. He can continue to build on the goodwill he has built in Big Blue Nation by winning this rivalry showdown with Louisville. The Cardinals are far more competitive than they were under Kenny Payne, but they were plagued by injuries early on and will be fairly significant underdogs in this game. We’ll see if Pat Kelsey can come up with a game plan that puts Louisville in position to pull off an upset.

This may not be the best game of the day, but I would argue that it is the most powerful. The 92nd meeting of one of the sport’s most heated rivalries seems almost a must-see for both sides. For Cincinnati, if not now, then when? The Bearcats haven’t beaten Xavier since Wes Miller got the job, and with Cincinnati probably being his best team yet and the game being played at Cincy’s home stadium, there are few excuses not to win it. On Xavier’s side, a rivalry win would flip the narrative of an otherwise disappointing non-conference start for the Musketeers. There’s a loss here, and Xavier enters Big East play without a clear Quad 1 or Quad 2 win, while downplaying the fact that the Big East as a whole has had a difficult performance in the non-conference .

This long-standing Pac-12 rivalry between two West Coast powers was renewed as a non-conference battle and played this year at the Footprint Center in Phoenix. Arizona has been one of the most disappointing teams in the sport so far, starting 0-4 in games against quality competition and needing a win here to leave non-conference play with some meat on its bones in terms of resume. But for a team that has had some issues on offense (particularly in the halfcourt), it might not be fun to face a UCLA team that currently has a top-five defense nationally according to KenPom.
