Ciryl Gane might have gotten away with one.

The former UFC interim heavyweight champion escaped with a razor-thin split decision victory over Alexander Volkov on the UFC 310 pay-per-view card on Saturday at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The verdict immediately sparked boos from the crowd and it was a puzzling sight as Gane fled the Octagon ahead of his post-fight interview before eventually returning and admitting he was unhappy with his performance.

“I am not happy with my fight. I broke my toes in the first second of the fight,” Gane said.

“I won, but I’m not happy.”

Gane (13-2) would have secured the win early when he knocked out Volkov (39-11) in the opening round with a sharp guillotine choke attempt that appeared to put Volkov in serious danger.

However, the 36-year-old Volkov survived to the horn and then overwhelmed the 34-year-old Gane in the second round with a spinning backfist – the best shot of the fight from both men.

Volkov also held top position for most of the third round, while Gane spent most of the five-minute frame unsuccessfully searching for a kimura attempt from below.

In the end, two judges saw a score of 29-28 for Gane, giving the Frenchman the first and second rounds, while the sole dissenter scored a score of 29-28 for Volkov.

The win puts Gane on a two-fight streak following his disappointing title loss to Jon Jones. For Volkov, it also marks a four-fight winning streak that brought the former Bellator champion to the brink of title contention.

Gane and Volkov fought back in June 2021, with Gane winning a dominant unanimous decision and catapulting himself into an interim title shot.
