Unai Emery gives a straight answer to what went wrong for Aston Villa against Chelsea

Aston Villa coach Unai Emery gave a one-word answer when asked what went wrong in his side’s 3-0 defeat to Chelsea.

Goals from Nicolas Jackson, Enzo Fernandez and Cole Palmer extended Villa’s winless run in all competitions to eight.

It was an unusually poor performance from Villa, who struggled to break Chelsea’s press.

When asked why his team wasn’t at the races, Emery replied bluntly: “Chelsea.”

When asked to elaborate, Emery repeated his statement.

However, the Spaniard was more willing to provide further details on his side’s attacking weaknesses of late.

The gap against Chelsea was the fourth time in Villa’s last five games that they had failed to score.

“They were more or less in the spotlight, fighting man-to-man,” Emery said.

“We knew beforehand that this was an option and we had our chances. We didn’t score any goals, but I worry if we don’t create chances. Today we created it.”

“Of course they more or less control the game here in 90 minutes if you don’t score. They felt like they were strong and comfortable, they could score like they did.”

“We had to accept it because it’s Chelsea and we have to keep going and try to keep the balance.”

Aside from the worrying result that saw Villa drop to 12th in the table, Emery could have a major injury problem.

Superstar goalkeeper Emi Martinez was subbed off at halftime and replaced by Robin Olsen.

Towards the end of the first half, Martinez required medical attention as Villa’s physiotherapists wanted to work on his hand.

Emery confirmed that this was indeed the injury suffered by Martinez, but was unable to provide further details.

“I don’t know for sure right now,” Emery said.

“It’s his hand. We need to check him out.”

Emery won’t have to wait long to get another chance to end Villa’s winless run when the Midlands side host Brentford on Wednesday.

The Bees, who are in eighth place in the table, are heading into the duel with pride after a 4-1 win against Leicester City on Saturday.
