Unai Emery says Aston Villa are likely to be without Ross Barkley for up to three weeks due to a calf injury

Unai Emery says Ross Barkley could be out for up to three weeks after the Aston Villa midfielder suffered a calf injury in Friday’s FA Cup win over West Ham United.

The 31-year-old was replaced by Amadou Onana after the injury in the 23rd minute at Villa Park.

Villa manager Emery said: “Ross Barkley, yes, he had a small injury in his calf and hopefully not much. We will check it tomorrow, normally it takes two to three weeks.”

Barkley missed five games between September and October with a hamstring injury, but started Villa’s final game against Leicester City and scored the opening goal in the win.

He has made 23 appearances in all competitions this season and has made a valuable contribution since returning to Villa for the second time following a £5million summer move from Luton Town.

Fellow midfielder John McGinn suffered a hamstring injury in the game against Leicester, which will keep him out for several weeks and leave Emery with no midfield options.

Other central midfielders Emery has at his disposal include Amadou Onana, Boubacar Kamara and Youri Tielemans.

Villa progressed to the fourth round of the FA Cup after a 2-1 win over West Ham.

Villa’s upcoming games are trips to Everton and Arsenal in the Premier League before traveling to Monaco in the Champions League.
