UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson fatally shot outside New York Hilton hotel: sources

The CEO of UnitedHealth was fatally shot in the chest in a targeted attack Wednesday morning outside the Hilton Hotel in Midtown.

Brian Thompson, 50, was at the hotel about 6:46 a.m., arriving early for a conference, when a masked man who was supposedly waiting for him shot the CEO repeatedly and fled east on 6th Avenue, police sources said the post with.

Thomas was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead, police said.

Officials said there have been no arrests so far and that the investigation is ongoing.

The suspect was described as a white male wearing a cream jacket, a black face mask and black and white sneakers. Officials said he also had a gray backpack with him.

Witnesses told the Post the suspect was seen walking near the hotel, on 6th Avenue.

Sources said the shooter was not a guest at the hotel, but it is unclear whether he had other business there.

When the suspect spotted Thompson, he began shooting from a distance, hitting him several times, police sources added.

The masked man then fled through Ziegfeld Alley and jumped on a bicycle to flee the crime scene.

Thompson, who has worked at UnitedHealth for 20 years, assumed the role of CEO of UnitedHealth in 2021.

He previously served as head of the company’s government programs, including Medicare and retirement.
