The CEO of UnitedHealthcare was shot and killed in midtown Manhattan on Wednesday morning, a law enforcement official told CNN.

Brian Thompson went to the New York Hilton Hotel in midtown Manhattan in a suit and tie to attend UnitedHealthcare’s annual investor conference, held in the ballroom.

A gunman, who investigators told CNN was masked in subfreezing temperatures, waited about 10 minutes before Thompson arrived before opening fire from 20 feet away, striking Thompson multiple times.

The gunman fled, broke through an alley and jumped onto a bicycle, the official told CNN. Investigators continue to examine the area. Police currently believe the suspect fled to Central Park.

The 50-year-old manager was shot in the chest. According to the NYPD, emergency responders transported him to Mount Sinai West in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead.

Police investigate the scene of a shooting in which UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was shot and killed in New York on December 4, 2024.

“We are deeply saddened by the events this morning in the region and our thoughts are with everyone affected by the tragedy. Further questions should be directed to the New York Police Department,” a spokesperson for the New York Hilton Midtown told CNN.

Details of the circumstances are not immediately clear, but investigators believe it appears to have been a targeted shooting. No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing, the NYPD said. Police are expected to provide a briefing on the incident later this morning.

CNN has reached out to UnitedHealthcare for comment.

Thompson was named Chief Executive Officer of UnitedHealthcare in April 2021. UnitedHealthcare is part of UnitedHealth Group and is ranked fifth on the Fortune 500, according to the company.

UnitedHealthcare’s parent company, UnitedHealth Group, abruptly ended its scheduled conference Wednesday morning, citing “a very serious medical situation involving one of our team members.” The company did not comment further.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
