The CEO of insurance giant UnitedHealthcare was fatally shot in the chest outside a Manhattan hotel on Wednesday morning. Reports suggest it may have been a targeted attack.

Brian Thompson, 50, was shot at by a masked man about 6:46 a.m. outside New York’s Hilton Midtown, where the company was scheduled to hold an investor meeting, police sources said New York Post.

The married health care executive, whose net worth is estimated at $43 million, was taken to hospital in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries.

His suspect reportedly fled the scene on a bicycle and remains at large. The post reported that the suspected shooter was wearing a cream-colored jacket, a black face mask and black and white sneakers.

Sources told the newspaper that the suspect shot Thompson “from a distance” after spotting him on the street. He had previously allegedly been walking around near the hotel. Other sources confirmed this report to Bloomberg, claiming the gunman was about 20 feet away from Thompson when he opened fire.

Thompson, who lives in suburban Minneapolis, was scheduled to speak at the investor meeting at the Hilton later Wednesday, according to a company news release.

Police have not yet released a formal statement on the fatal collision and did not respond to requests for comment from The Daily Beast.

UnitedHealth Group, the parent company of UnitedHealthcare, began its investor meeting at 8 a.m. but called it off a little over an hour later, Pix 11 reported.

“We are dealing with a very serious medical situation,” Chief Executive Andrew Witty told investors before abruptly ending the event Bloomberg.

The investor meeting was well publicized in advance. A press release shared by the company states that it will talk about its huge revenue of $450 billion to $455 billion in 2025 as well as the positive performance of its stock on Wall Street.

Thompson, who heads UnitedHealth Group’s insurance division called UnitedHealthcare, has been with the company for more than 20 years, according to his LinkedIn.

He was selected in April 2021 for the position of CEO of the company, which is the largest health insurer in the world and ranked 8th on the Fortune Global 500 list. UnitedHealthcare insures more than 52 million people worldwide, about 90 percent of them in the states.

The company is based in Minnesota but was in New York for its investor meeting.

A spokesman for UnitedHealth Group did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
