UNLV Football signs Dan Mullen to record contract

According to the contract for the University of Nevada, that’s the going rate for five-year football coach Dan Mullen, Las Vegas’ newest hire.

Mullen’s hiring last week makes him the highest-paid coach in Nevada history. The Reno Gazette Journal obtained a copy of the 24-page contract on Tuesday.

Mullen, a former coach at Florida and Mississippi State, has a career record of 103-61 in 13 seasons. He has been a college football analyst for ESPN since 2022.

Dan Mullen’s UNLV contract will pay him a lot of money

Mullen’s contract calls for an annual payout of $3.5 million for five years. He is scheduled to earn an additional $600,000 over three years if he survives the end of his contract on December 31, 2029.

Mullen is now the highest-paid Mountain West coach. Jay Norvell, who left Nevada to coach at Colorado State, earned $1.8 million this year.

In 2025, Nevada football coach Jeff Choate will make $1.1 million in the second year of his five-year contract. Multiple media outlets have reported that Mullen’s salary is higher than that of Choate and 11 of his full-time assistants and coaches combined.

What happens if Dan Mullen leaves UNLV or is fired?

If Mullen leaves, he will owe UNLV millions. If he leaves for a Power 4 or NFL head coaching job before Dec. 1, 2025, he will owe UNLV $7 million. It drops to $5 million if he goes somewhere other than a Power 4 team or the NFL.

For the next four years, this payout will decrease by one million each year.

If he is fired before Dec. 31, 2029, UNLV will owe Mullen 80 percent of his salary. If UNLV lets him go in two years and he has three years left on his contract, UNLV would owe him $8.4 million.

What Bonuses and Perks Does Dan Mullen’s UNLV Contract Offer?

In addition to a record contract, Mullen received a $35,000 signing bonus. He is also entitled to $600,000 over three years if he stays at UNLV through the end of his contract.

He will also receive $25,000 for taking UNLV to a conference championship game and $50,000 if the team wins. It costs $100,000 to get into the College Football Playoff and another $100,000 to win.

He is also eligible for up to $20,000 per year if players achieve an average GPA of 3.0 or higher and successfully complete credits toward graduation.

As part of the deal, the coach will also receive a free car, a $20,000 hosting account and a suite for friends, family and guests at all UNLV home football games. He will receive 19 season tickets to all UNLV home football games, four tickets to UNLV basketball games and up to 10 tickets to all other varsity home games.

The contract also includes a golf or country club membership.

University of Nevada’s Reno did not comment on Dan Mullen’s salary as UNLV football coach

UNR President Brian Sandoval wished Mullen well but did not comment on salary.
