Unreal Tournament returns… as cosmetics in Warframe and Fortnite

  • The Unreal/Unreal Tournament franchise is the source of cosmetics in two games.
  • Warframe gets free weapon skins.
  • Fortnite receives a package containing various cosmetics.

Fans of the Unreal Tournament franchise may find today’s news bittersweet, as the series is coming back in limited form as a cosmetic series for other games.

The first of these is Warframe, which includes a set of three cosmetic weapons that are completely free to own. Unreal Tournament’s rocket launcher, anti-aircraft cannon, and shock rifle will be available to Warframe players in just a few hours at the time of writing.

“Log in to claim: Log in starting December 9th at 2:00 p.m. ET to claim your Unreal Tournament skins by December 23rd. Did you miss the login reward? Don’t worry! After December 23rd, these skins will hit the in-game market as a 1-credit pack – you can keep it forever!” reads the announcement.

These weapon skins are not new additions to Warframe as they were already available in 2020. This is another chance for players to grab the items for free if they missed them the first time around.

For those wondering why Warframe brought back the cosmetics, it may have something to do with Fortnite. The official Twitter/

This teaser contains the date December 10, 2024, which is today. No full announcement has been made about this crossover yet, but it’s still very early morning in America right now, so we’re expecting more details later today. Fortnite is currently unavailable due to maintenance and an update, so Unreal Tournament may already be in the game when the servers come back up.

However, we can find out more information from the numerous Fortnite leakers. One of them reports that the Unreal Tournament pack in Fortnite will cost 2,200 V-Bucks and will include skins for the aforementioned Garog and Samael, as well as a pickaxe and a wrap. The contents of the bundle will also be available as a separate purchase.

As a reminder, Epic Games, the company behind Fortnite, also developed Unreal Tournament (along with Warframe maker Digital Extremes). We have to wonder if this push for the property is simply to sell cosmetics within Fortnite or if the company is planning a bigger announcement and this is all part of marketing.

We are on the side of those who doubt this. Fortnite continues to grow and rake in billions of dollars, so there’s little incentive to focus on anything else. We’d like to prove otherwise, so we’ll wait and see if anything else happens.
