Up to 10 cm of snow, gusty winds expected

LANSING — The second major winter storm in a week could bring gusty winds and up to 4 inches of snow to the Lansing area by Thursday morning, forecasters said.

A winter weather advisory was issued Tuesday afternoon for the period from 7 a.m. Wednesday to 7 a.m. Thursday.

The biggest concern is Wednesday evening, when much of the snow is expected to fall and temperatures will drop into the low teens, said Rebecca Hansen, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids.

The Lansing area could see 2 to 4 inches of snow and wind gusts up to 35 miles per hour. How much snow falls could depend on where the heaviest bands develop, and total amounts could vary widely even in a small area, forecasters said.

Blowing snow often means slick road conditions, so drivers should proceed slowly, Hansen said. Extremely cold temperatures overnight into Thursday could reduce the effectiveness of road salt, she added.

The detailed Lansing weather forecast called for about an inch of snow Wednesday and about 3 inches Wednesday night.

Heavy snow is expected along the Lake Michigan shoreline, with 8 to 14 inches forecast near and north of Ludington.
