Update on the Dolphins QB's hips against the Browns

Tua Tagovailoa said his hip injury is nothing serious, but the Miami Dolphins could still be without their starting quarterback today. Is Tua healthy? Will he play against the Cleveland Browns?

The QB has performed exceptionally well over the past two months since returning from a concussion, keeping the Dolphins’ slim playoff hopes alive as they fought their way back to nearly .500. But a lingering hip injury kept him from practicing in the week leading up to the Week 17 game.

Tua also said he was injured last week, although he looked good in a 29-17 win over the San Francisco 49ers when he went 22 of 34 for 215 yards and a touchdown to De’Von Achane. Coach Mike McDaniel may also be without receiver Jaylen Waddle, who missed last week’s game.

Here’s what we know about Tua’s status, his injury history and whether he’ll play against the Browns today:

Is Tua playing today?

Tua was downgraded to doubtful on Saturday, meaning there’s a high chance he won’t play today. He was limited during practice last week. When asked about his hip on Thursday, Tua told reporters: “It’s good.”

Tua battled pain in last week’s win over the 49ers, Tracy Wolfson of CBS Sports reported. She said Tua told her last week, “It would be a challenge to play through the hip.”

Who is the Miami Dolphins quarterback today?

If Tua is sidelined, Tyler Huntley will start. “Snoop” last played on October 20 in a loss to the Indianapolis Colts, where he went 7 of 13 for 87 yards and a touchdown and added 20 rushing yards. Tim Boyle came into the game after Huntley sustained a shoulder injury, which landed him on injured reserve.

Boyle was released in October to make room for Tagovailoa as he returned from his concussion. The Dolphins designated Skylar Thompson from the practice squad before today’s game, and he would be Huntley’s replacement.

Tua’s stats this season: 291 of 399 (72.9%), 2,867 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, 7 interceptions, 101.4 QB rating, 21 sacks, 17 carries, 49 rushing yards, 7 fumbles.

Tua’s 260.6 yards per game is fourth in the NFL, and his .729 completion percentage leads the league.

Over the last four weeks, Tua went 121 for 167 (72.5%) for 1,107 yards and six touchdowns with three interceptions (all in one game). For comparison, Skylar Thompson, Tim Boyle and Tyler Huntley combined for 637 yards on 67 of 111 passes (60.36%) with one TD and one INT in four games without him.

What happened to Tua Tagovailoa?

Tua suffered a hip injury in a loss to the Houston Texans on December 15. He threw three interceptions in that game but was able to play consistently in last week’s win over the 49ers. CBS Sports’ Tracy Wolfson reported Saturday that it was the same hip he injured in college, but in a different location.

Tua has played well since returning from a concussion early in the season. On a fourth down play late in the third quarter on Thursday night, September 12, Tua fought his way up the middle for a first down. He lunged at Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, his head hitting the defender’s chest and then hitting the ground.

Tua’s arms froze in the air in what neurologists call a “fencing response,” a sign of head trauma. He was able to leave the field and did not return to the game. He was later diagnosed with a concussion, his third official concussion in the past three seasons. Tua was placed on injured reserve on September 17, automatically ruling him out of the Dolphins’ next four games.

After throwing an interception on Monday night, November 11, Tua charged at Rams linebacker Christian Rozeboom by diving for his legs. As a result, Rozeboom’s knee hit the quarterback square on the side of the helmet. Tua did not appear to be injured during the game and returned to the field on the next possession.

Tua’s college football career at Alabama was derailed by injuries. After subbing for Jalen Hurts at halftime to win the 2018 national championship game, he suffered a high ankle sprain in the SEC championship game the following year. He underwent “rope surgery” and was back in the Crimson Tide’s College Football Playoff run less than a month later.

After returning from another ankle sprain in 2019, Tua dislocated his right hip in the final game of his college career. He reportedly screamed “in pain” on the field before being carried to the locker room. The injury caused him to fall from the projected No. 1 overall pick to the Dolphins’ No. 5 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

In the NFL, Tua has missed 13 regular season games and one playoff game in his first five NFL seasons. He played in all 17 games as well as the playoff game in 2023. He missed four games this season while on IR.
