Update on the Gundy saga: OSU and Gundy are reportedly working on contract details

Wednesday was a wild ride in the Oklahoma State world, but there was nothing on Friday.

Oklahoma State and football coach Mike Gundy were reportedly in a standoff at one point, only for later reports to indicate that the two were hammering out reconstructed contract details. As things stand, the trend is for Gundy to remain the Cowboys’ coach, but it didn’t always feel that way on Friday.

The day began with a board meeting at 7:30 a.m. in the OSU Student Union. The agenda was “to review evaluations/assessments and other information relevant to the employment of Oklahoma State University football personnel.” The meeting lasted about two hours. Essentially all of the time was spent in the board meeting. OSU President Dr. Kayse Shrum and athletic director Chad Weiberg accompanied the Regents for much of the meeting. Gundy wasn’t there.

After the meeting, Board President Jimmy Harrel said a plan had been drawn up and would be announced once it was finalized.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel then reported earlier in the afternoon that OSU and Gundy were in a “standoff” and that OSU had asked the coach to restructure his contract and that OSU had discussed releasing him for cause if he did so Don’t sign the contract. KOTV’s John Holcomb then reported that the restructured deal would pay Gundy less money and “limit his autonomy in hiring coordinators.” Holcomb reported that Gundy had until 5 p.m. Friday to make a decision.

That time passed and passed without anything being made public, but as the night wore on, more and more reports emerged (like this one from Holcomb, Dylan Buckingham, Scott Wright and Robert Allen) that Gundy and OSU were hammering out contract details. At one point there was a thought that something might be announced on Friday evening, but it looks like those discussions will continue until Saturday.

This is the current state of affairs. It was a wild 16 hours or so, and while there were ups and downs, nothing was made official. Maybe that will happen on Saturday, but right now it looks like Gundy will be running out of the tunnel with the Cowboys again in 2025 – which would be his 21st season at the helm.
