Upon closer inspection: 3 tackles against Utah in the final minute of the loss to the 76ers

SALT LAKE CITY — Jordan Clarkson’s foot was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Philadelphia forward Paul George had desperately grabbed an offensive rebound with the shot clock running out and turned to shoot a desperate fadeaway. His foot clipped Clarkson’s and caused him to fall to the ground.

Foul.

Jazz coach Will Hardy quickly questioned the play, but after review, the decision stood. That was one of three final-minute criticisms that played in Philadelphia’s favor as the 76ers topped Utah with a 114-111 victory at the Delta Center on Saturday.

Boos rained down on the referees after every decision, and the George shout even sparked a heartfelt chant that clearly expressed the crowd’s displeasure.

To be fair, it’s been a while since these fans have been able to cheer on their team.

“I feel like we’ve been going for a year,” Hardy said. “It feels like we haven’t been here forever.”

Saturday was Utah’s first home game in over two weeks and just the team’s third game at the Delta Center this month. As the saying goes, absence makes the heart grow fonder, and Saturday’s competition provided one of the best atmospheres of the season.

It helped that things were so close.

The game ended on a single possession with 5:01 remaining, except for four seconds. This made each review that much more impactful. The officials gave the Sixers two out-of-bounds plays in the final minute (admittedly correctly) and also ruled on Clarkson’s foul.

Lauri Markkanen led the Jazz with 23 points, while Brice Sensabaugh and Collin Sexton each contributed 20 points in the loss. Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey both had 32 points to pace the Sixers.
