UPSA requested the dismissal of ACP Dr. Benjamin Agordzo as lecturer for alleged inciting comments on IGP

A formal petition has been submitted to the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) seeking the removal of retired police officer, Dr. Benjamin Agordzo is required by his position as a lecturer.

The January 12, 2025 petition was written by one Kojo Otchere, who raised concerns about Dr. Agordzo and his alleged past misconduct during his tenure with the Ghana Police Service.

Allegations in the petition

The petitioner cites the recent statements of Dr. Agordzo in a television program broadcast on TV3 in which the retired officer allegedly attacked young police officers against the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, incited.

According to the petition, Dr. Agordzo was captured on video saying: “Some police officers will mobilize and drive him (the IGP) out of office, mark my words. Police personnel will lock his door.“The video was described by the petitioner as destabilizing and dangerous.

The petition argues that such comments were unbecoming of a senior lecturer and had the potential to undermine discipline within the Ghana Police Service and destabilize the country.

By advocating a breakdown in discipline, Dr. Agordzo, who was supposed to be a leadership lecturer, laid the foundation for chaos and lawlessness in society.“ says the letter.

Further allegations from RTI query

The petitioner also referred to information received through an RTI (Right to Information) query and alleged that Dr. Agordzo had committed misconduct in the past during his time with the Ghana Police Service.

According to the petition, Dr. Agordzo was legally convicted of six counts of misconduct, which led to his dismissal from the police force. After being out of service for almost two years, he was reportedly reinstated by the Police Board but demoted from the rank of superintendent to deputy superintendent of police.

For a person who has been legally convicted of six counts of misconduct, being a leadership lecturer at UPSA leaves much to be desired in terms of filling and taking on leadership roles as a mentor to the next generation“wrote the petitioner.

Calls to action

The petitioner has requested the Vice Chancellor to approve the appointment of Dr. Agordzo to be a lecturer at UPSA.

He highlighted the potential reputational risks associated with hiring someone who has allegedly demonstrated a pattern of misconduct and whose recent public statements have been widely criticized.

On this basis – his inflammatory public comments and his story detailed in the RTI application – I am writing to you to reconsider the appointment of Mr Agordzo as an employee of your institution.“, the letter concludes.

Dr. Benjamin Agordzo, a retired senior police officer, has been a vocal critic of certain policies and decisions within the Ghana Police Service.

The University of Professional Studies, Accra has not yet issued a statement on the petition.
