USPS mail delivery, services closing Thursday in memory of late former President Carter

The United States Postal Service (USPS) has suspended its regular mail delivery and retail service Thursday to mark a nationwide day of mourning for the late former President Jimmy Carter. Limited package delivery services will continue to be available.

Normal operations will resume on Friday, including retail, delivery and pickup schedules.

USPS says customers can still purchase stamps at most grocery stores, pharmacies and convenience stores.

Postal products and services are always available online. There, customers can track packages, purchase stamps, hold mail, schedule a package pickup, and more.

Carter died on December 29 after being admitted to hospice care nearly two years earlier.

The 39th president last celebrated his 100th birthday in October.

Carter’s remains lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda this week ahead of his funeral Thursday at Washington National Cathedral.

All living presidents are invited and Joe Biden will deliver a eulogy. Biden also signed a bill to name a USPS facility in Plains — Carter’s hometown — after Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter.

The Carter family will then return after a private funeral in their hometown at 3:45 p.m. at Maranatha Baptist Church to bury their patriarch in Plains, where Carter, a devout evangelical, taught Sunday school for decades.

Carter will then be buried in a private gravesite in a plot visible from the porch of his home.
