UVM Football vs. Marshall Live Score, Updates: 2024 College Cup Final

Vermont football has reached the top of the NCAA, playing for the College Cup national championship title.

Vermont (15-2-6) and the No. 13 seed Marshall Thundering Herd (15-1-7) meet at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina on Monday at 8 p.m. The showdown will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2 and streamed on ESPN+.

The Catamounts reached their first national title game after Friday night’s comeback win that required a shootout to overtake No. 3 Denver. Marshall, meanwhile, stunned top-ranked Ohio State with an early goal for a 1-0 win.

Vermont is the first school in Eastern America to advance to a national championship game in a team sport.

End of regulation: Vermont 1, Marshall 1

We’re going into overtime. Marcell Papp’s equalizer in the 81st minute takes us into extra time. Vermont almost won it in regulation time, but Marshall goalkeeper Aleksa Janjic made an incredible save on Maximilian Kissel’s cutback shot on a breakaway.

9:23 left in the second half: Vermont 1, Marshall 1

Catamounts has done it again.

Another late goal and Vermont’s championship hopes are back. Marcell Papp scores the equalizer and beats Marshall goalkeeper Aleksa Janjic with a low shot into the left post. Max Murray and David Ismail as assists.

Ismail threw Papp through the Marshall defense into the penalty area. Papp ran to the through ball and scored the perfect finish.

It’s Vermont’s 21st goal in the 76th minute or later.

Bazini’s header shot goes over the crossbar. Marshall goalkeeper Aleksa Janjic had a good feeling whether the ball was in the frame.

Marshall goal after a rebound: Tarik Pannholzer, the goalscorer in the semifinals, is there in front of the Vermont goal for goalkeeper Niklas Herceg’s shot.

Rai Pinto with the cross from the end line. Herceg dived but couldn’t hold on to the well-hit ball.

Since Adrian Schulze Solano from Vermont is down with an injury, those responsible are investigating a possible Catamount handball in the penalty area.

The video review says no handball. Solano also returned to action.

31 minutes remaining in the second half: Vermont 0, Marshall 0

A run from the back by Max Murray creates a chance for Yaniv Bazini. But Marshall defender Alex Bamford made a perfect tackle in the penalty area as Bazini tried to go left.

38 minutes left in the second half: Vermont 0, Marshall 0

Alexander Stjernegaard registered Marshall’s first shot into the net. Stjernegaard shoots at speed from 20 meters directly at the Vermont goalkeeper, Niklas Herceg.

Halftime: Vermont 0, Marshall 0

Marshall outscored Vermont 5-4 in the first half. But Vermont with the only two shots on goal – both of which look really quality – and a 3-1 advantage in corners.

Near the end of the half, Zach Barrett and a Marshall defender ran toward a long pass down the left sideline and into the penalty area, causing both players to collide. No call. Looked like a good defense, but the Marshall fans were angry.

To end the half in the final seconds, Marshall defended well on two long throw-ins and a Vermont corner.

Vermont’s first change: Maximilian Kissel comes on for David Ismail. Kissel is second on the team with ten goals, all of which came off the bench.

The game was suspended while Marshall coaches attended to goalkeeper Aleksa Janjic, who appeared to have injured his right arm and shoulder.

Play resumed and Janjic remains in the game for Marshall.

16 minutes left in the first half: Vermont 0, Marshall 0

Another promising chance from a Vermont corner, but Bazini’s header from a serve from Sydney Wathuta goes wide of the left post.

23 minutes left in the first half: Vermont 0, Marshall 0

Oh so close for the Catamounts: Ryan Zellefrow’s run down the sideline in his own half brings Yaniv Bazini into midfield. The star striker puts the ball in front for David Ismail, whose shot is blocked in the penalty area by Marshall goalkeeper Aleksa Janjic. Vermont can’t contain the rebound then.

25 minutes left in the first half: Vermont 0, Marshall 0

Marshall tests Vermont’s defense on both wings. Catamounts have kept their shape at the back. Nothing too threatening from the herd yet.

30 minutes left in the first half: Vermont 0, Marshall 0

Marshall wins his first corner and Vermont successfully clears without causing any trouble.

41 minutes left in the first half: Vermont 0, Marshall 0

Vermont with the first big chance of the game: Sydney Wathuta’s corner hits the head of Zach Barrett. But the Vermont defender’s distraction goes straight to Marshall goalkeeper Aleksa Janjic’s stomach.

Pre-Game Thoughts: Vermont Soccer vs. Marshall

When Vermont head coach Rob Dow was asked about Marshall on Sunday afternoon, he mentioned two concerns: the Herd’s man defense and their high-scoring Brazilian forward Lineker Rodrigues dos Santos.

“(Marshall) is organized defensively. We have to attack spaces and be very determined when we have the ball,” said Dow.

Rodrigues dos Santos has 15 goals and five assists. His 35 points rank third nationally; the 15 goals are fourth. Rodrigues dos Santos has five goals and two assists in Marshall’s three NCAA Tournament games.

“The bottom line is we have to close No. 7,” Dow said.

As mentioned in Sunday’s preview, Vermont and Marshall are tied in raw stats. Vermont’s scored one more goal than Marshall (46-45) and both teams conceded 18 goals. Marshall has yet to trail in this NCAA Tournament, while Vermont recorded its first deficit in the semifinals against Denver.

Heart disasters: Vermont soccer scored a lot of late goals

Yaniv Bazini, recently named an All-American third teamer, scored the equalizer against Denver in the 84th minute of Friday’s College Cup semifinal.

Late regulation goals are nothing new for the Catamounts: Bazini’s goal was Vermont’s 20th in the 76th minute or later this fall.

“We are a team with the best mentality in the country,” said Bazini. “We never give up, even when we are exhausted. We will keep fighting, we will keep trying to score. We’re just animals.”

Recent unseeded champions at the NCAA College Cup

This is just the third time in the last decade that Vermont has defeated two top-four seeds in the NCAA Tournament (No. 2 Denver, No. 3 Pittsburgh). And in the second round, Vermont edged out No. 7 Hofstra on the road.

With these upsets, Vermont becomes the first unseeded team since Akron in 2018 to reach the championship with a full tournament field. In 2020, Marshall was an unseeded champion in a 36-team field due to COVID.

The last unseeded national champion is UC Santa Barbara in 2006.
