Vanderbilt football faces Georgia Tech in the Birmingham Bowl

Vanderbilt Football plays Georgia Tech in the Birmingham Bowl at Protective Stadium.

The game will take place on December 27 (2:30 p.m. CT, ESPN).

The Commodores (6-6) will play in their first bowl since 2018. They qualified for the bowl by winning three SEC games against Alabama, Auburn and Kentucky, with non-conference wins over Virginia Tech, Ball State and Alcorn State.

One of the biggest benefits of bowl eligibility is that Vanderbilt can complete additional bowl practices before the game, allowing the Commodores to give their younger players reps.

Several Vanderbilt players have already announced they would enter the transfer portal, but only one, Gunnar Hansen, made a significant contribution. Alan Wright, a reserve defensive lineman, said he would transfer but would still play in the bowl game.

The Yellow Jackets earned a win over Miami (7-5) and played eight overtimes against Georgia this season.

Georgia and Vanderbilt last played in 2016.
