Vanna White Recalls the Funniest ‘Wheel of Fortune’ Puzzles That Made Her Laugh (Exclusive)

It’s not Vanna White allegedly freak out if a Wheel of Fortune The contestant gives a spectacularly wrong answer — but she told PEOPLE in a 2019 interview that some of them were just too funny not to smile.

“I feel for our contestants because they are so nervous,” said White, who is celebrating the show’s 50th anniversary on Jan. 6.

“But I’m laughing inside at some of the wrong answers,” she added. “Half the time, I don’t think they even realize what they’re saying. As was the case then, the answer was: “More fun than a barrel full of monkeys” and the participant advised: “More fun than a barrel full of Vikings!”

On December 30, one contestant certainly made viewers laugh when she guessed the wrong famous city food – instead of New York Cheesecake, she guessed “New York Cheesesteak.”

“From now on she will never be able to show her face in New York or Philadelphia,” one viewer posted on Reddit about the funny mistake.

But White recalled funnier — and even more NSFW — answers over the course of her 42 years on the show.

“There was one guy who thought it was a ‘Styrofoam hat’ instead of a ‘Styrofoam cup,'” she said. “And then there was a famous case where the answer was ‘Gone with the wind’ and the participant replied ‘Done with one hand’.”

Most recently, on December 17, contestant Phil McManus made many viewers, including White, laugh out loud at his now-viral mistake. The clue was “same letter,” and since it was the holiday episode of the show, the answer was “chocolate, chestnuts and chimneys.”

McManus’ guess? “Chocolates, chestnuts and Chickens.

But that’s not even White’s favorite blunder of all time.

“We had a puzzle about where the answer was Tram named Desire” she remembered. “And only the ‘m’ was missing.” She added with a laugh: “The participant replied: ‘Tram’ Naked Wish!'”

While White celebrates the show’s 50th anniversary on January 6, she marked another milestone last summer when she said goodbye to her longtime co-host Pat Sajak, 78, whose final episode aired on January 7 after 41 years at the helm June was broadcast. Ryan Seacrest took over hosting duties in September.

As for her own retirement? It’s not happening still. In September 2024, it was reported that White had signed a contract to stay until the 2005–2026 season Wheel of Fortune.

Before Sajak’s departure, she gave a heartfelt and emotional speech on the show in honor of her longtime friend.

“I can’t believe tomorrow is our last show together,” White said the day before his departure. “I don’t know how to put into words what the last 40 years have meant to me, but I’ll try.”

She added: “8000 episodes have passed like that. When I started I was so green. You made me so comfortable and so confident, Pat. You made me who I am, you really did.”

“We’ve seen our children grow up together, we’ve traveled all over the world, we’ve eaten hundreds of meals together, we’ve laughed, we’ve cried, we’ve celebrated,” she said.

“What an incredible and unforgettable journey we have had,” she added.
