Veterinarian calls opponent for being overweight

There are fights and missing weight, and then there is missing weight without even trying and choosing to use it as a tactic to gain an advantage over an opponent.

UFC veteran Randy Brown accuses his UFC 310 opponent Bryan Battle of the latter. On Friday, Battle lost an incredible four pounds in weight, and Brown didn’t take kindly to his opponent’s lack of professionalism.

Brown joined Sportsnet’s Aaron Bronsteter invited for an interview shortly after the official weigh-in and he didn’t hide his frustration.

“It’s one of those things,” Brown said. “We both knew about the fight at the same time. I came in as a professional. I have never lost weight at any point in my career. I have done this walk more than 15 times or more. I did the weight. I think it’s a little unprofessional, but it is what it is. We’ll see what happens.”

Brown was then asked if he had found the weight loss difficult. He didn’t give a clear answer, but gave more insight into his opinion on Battle’s handling of the situation.

“They knew they couldn’t make the weight,” Brown continued. “So you could have told me. They could have said something. I would have quit and we could have made it a catchweight. But they wanted me to suffer. I know the game. They are not smooth. They want me to suffer so I can come down and he can wrestle with me. He would be a bigger body to wrestle with me. They understood that I am a big welterweight. I know the game, but no, he should reduce the weight. 170 was the deal, be a pro and do 170.”

Here’s a look at the entire interview:

Battle was the only fighter on the card missing weight. For what it’s worth, Battle looked pretty rocky on the scales, as you can see in the video below.

That is, a four-pound weight loss is usually an indication that the fighter has given up any serious attempt to make the contracted weight days before the weigh-in. Brown’s point is that Battle’s team could have told him they were having problems.

If that had happened, Brown wouldn’t have had to deal with cutting weight, which might have put him at a competitive disadvantage.

The fight will continue, but there could be a little more animosity on Brown’s side as he looks to defeat an opponent who may be bigger in the Octagon. Brown receives 30% of Battle’s purse as punishment for the miss weight.
