Victor Wembanyama reaches new milestone against the New York Knicks

Victor Wembanyama had a little more history to give NBA fans in the first half of his Christmas debut against the New York Knicks.

With his seventh rebound against the Knicks in Wednesday’s Christmas opener, the San Antonio Spurs’ sophomore phenom has now reached 1,000 points in his NBA career.

Jordan Howenstine of the Spurs’ public relations department noted that this made NBA history as he became only the second player in the association to record at least 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 350 blocks in the first 100 games of his tenure. Ironically, Wembanyam is the only one to have achieved it, alongside his trackmate David Robinson.

It was a dominant half for Wembanyama, who posted 24 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and two blocks to give the visiting Spurs a 58-51 halftime lead. The French superstar is meeting and perhaps exceeding all the expectations that were placed on him when the Spurs made him the top pick of the 2023 draft.

Wembanyama struggled in his first visit to Madison Square Garden last season, shooting just 4 of 14 from the field and grabbing an uncharacteristic nine rebounds in a 126-105 loss. He got his revenge in a rematch at Frost Bank Center in March, when his double-double of 40 points and 20 rebounds countered a 61-point tally from Jalen Brunson. San Antonio won the game in overtime 130-125.
