Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow has accepted that despite having a career year, he likely won’t take home the MVP award.

“I’m proud of the season I had,” Burrow told former MVP Cam Newton in an interview for ESPN. “You know, I would love to win an MVP at some point in my career. This year probably isn’t that year just because the season went for us. I think I deserve it, but the MVP usually goes to the quarterback of the best team and that’s not who we are this year.”

The Bengals are currently 8-8 and in third place in the AFC North, with several things needing to come together for them to make the playoffs:

  • The Bengals have to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday
  • The Kansas City Chiefs have to beat the Denver Broncos on Sunday
  • The Dolphins must lose or draw against the New York Jets on Sunday

Despite the Bengals’ limited playoff hopes, Burrow undoubtedly had an MVP season, according to previous winners.

“Burrow is one of three players ever to throw for 4,500 yards, 40 passing touchdowns (and) fewer than 10 interceptions in a single season,” Newton said. “Who else did this? Tom Brady in 2007 (and) Aaron Rodgers in 2011. You know what they had? They both won an MVP.”

Burrow, in his fifth season with Cincinnati, has left the MVP conversation behind and is now focused on helping the Bengals get a win in their final game of the regular season and potentially clinch a spot in the postseason.

“I’m just excited for the opportunity,” Burrow said. “We had the chance to make a statement. Of course we need help on Sunday, but we can control what we can control and finish our season the right way. The boys are excited about this opportunity, myself included.”
