Neither the Los Angeles Lakers nor the Golden State Warriors are at the top of the NBA championship race, but LeBron James believes he and Stephen Curry will continue to help solidify the league.

After the Lakers’ 115-113 win over Golden State on Christmas Day, James was asked about what “good stuff” the NBA has to offer every night. The four-time MVP responded with a three-word answer: “LeBron and Steph.”

A lack of compelling rivalries is often cited when fans discuss what’s missing in today’s NBA. With so much player movement, it’s difficult for teams and players to have a shared history that the top stars and title contenders had decades ago.

James and Curry are an obvious exception.

Sure, it’s always a big event when two future Hall of Famers face off on the court. However, LeBron vs. Steph is special because there were four matchups in the NBA Finals and the subsequent matchups in the Western Conference after James signed with the Lakers.

“It’s always a lot of fun,” Curry said of playing against James, according to ESPN Dave McMenamin. “For example, the competitive spirit, the history, its size. It just makes me appreciate everything we’ve been through, all the struggles back and forth and the fact that we’re still making it in 2024. And somehow the games are pretty electrifying and kind of a must-see TV situation…you don’t know how many opportunities you’re going to have on that kind of stage.

The encounters have added meaning now that fans know this won’t last forever. James is in his 22nd season and will turn 40 in a few days while Curry will turn 37 in March. Wednesday may have been the last time their paths crossed on Christmas Day, one of the most important dates on the NBA calendar.

The Lakers and Warriors play each other three more times this season, so there’s still plenty of opportunity to try out a groundbreaking rivalry.
