Former AEW star Penta made his highly anticipated WWE debut on Monday night’s episode of Raw.

Penta was Chad Gable’s mystery opponent and he defeated the American Made leader in his first match as a member of the WWE roster.

Penta was widely expected to be Gable’s opponent after Gable asked Raw general manager Adam Pearce last week to let him face the best luchador he could find.

During the match, Gable gave Penta a devastating ankle lock that seemed to signal the end of the match, but Penta converted it by hitting Gable with “The Sacrific,” nearly breaking his arm.

Writhing in pain, Gable managed to get to his feet, but Penta picked him up and drove him to the mat, securing the win by pinfall in his debut.

Cryptic vignettes have been airing on Raw over the past few weeks, and it quickly became clear that they foreshadowed Penta’s arrival in the WWE, as they showed the outline of his mask and alluded to his catchphrase, “Cero Miedo.”

Any doubts were put to rest on Raw last week when the mask featured the name “Penta” in the vignette.

After initially making a name for himself in his home country of Mexico as part of AAA, Penta first gained notoriety in the United States with the now-defunct Lucha Underground promotion.

Lucha Underground gained a cult-like following, and Penta was one of the main reasons for this, as he was one of the faces of the product and was a two-time Lucha Underground champion.

After Lucha Underground ended in 2018, Penta moved to Impact Wrestling and established himself as a top star there too. In addition to hosting the Impact World Tag Team Championships once with his brother Rey Fénix, Penta was also a one-time Impact World Champion.

Penta and Fénix were among AEW’s first signings and functioned primarily as a team called the Lucha Bros during their tenure.

They had no shortage of memorable matches in AEW, once holding the AEW World Tag Team Championships and once holding the AEW World Trios Championships alongside Pac.

In recent months, rumors and speculation have surfaced that Penta and Fénix would be letting their AEW contracts expire as a precursor to joining WWE.

However, Dave Meltzer is from Wrestling Observer Radio (h/t Aidan Gibbons of Cultaholic) reported that AEW extended Fénix’s contract to include up to a year of injury time, which resulted in Penta becoming a free agent himself.

While Fénix is widely expected to join his brother in WWE at some point, Penta made an impressive solo debut on Raw.

Penta is one of the most popular and well-known luchadores in the world, and if he can recapture some of the magic he had during his Lucha Underground run, he has a chance to become a big star in the WWE as well.
