Azerbaijan Airlines Flt. J2-8243 took off from the Azerbaijani capital of Baku and was en route to Grozny, Russia, when the pilot took the plane hundreds of miles off course and was possibly forced to land due to a bird strike.

The plane had 62 passengers and five crew members on board when it crashed on Wednesday. 29 people were found alive and hospitalized – including two children – while 38 were reported dead by AFP as of Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry, both pilots were reported dead by medical staff speaking to the Interfax news agency, and some of the survivors were in critical condition.

A video shared widely online and confirmed by Storyful showed a mangled plane fuselage lying on the ground as dazed passengers stumbled and limped as first responders tried to save others.

A woman was heard screaming as another conscious person was dragged away from the wrecked plane with a bloody left foot on the ground.

Another video taken from inside the crashed plane appeared to briefly show a person’s bloodied hair before panning around the shattered plane – with debris and people everywhere – as someone repeatedly groaned in pain.

On board were 37 Azerbaijanis, 16 Russians, six Kazakhstanis and three Kyrgyz citizens.

The crash occurred a few days after a Ukrainian drone attack in southern Russia. Drone movements between the two sides have caused local airports to close in the past, and at least one airport was closed Wednesday morning.

Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Russia were investigating the circumstances of the crash.
