Videos show effects of a magnitude 7.0 earthquake

A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck California Thursday morning near the city of Petrolia, about 265 miles north of San Francisco, causing strong shaking and a now-canceled tsunami warning that stretched from southern Oregon to San Francisco.

The U.S. Geological Survey estimates that more than 150,000 people may have been exposed to the earthquakes between north of Fort Bragg and Eureka.

The quake struck at 10:44 a.m. local time near California’s sparsely populated northern coast, just offshore, and was felt throughout Humboldt County. As of 12:30 p.m., less than two hours after the first quake, the area had experienced 13 separate aftershocks ranging in magnitude from 5.1 to 3.1, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. As of 2:30 p.m., the USGS had reported at least 39 aftershocks with a magnitude of at least 2.5 in the region, including Petrolia and Ferndale.

Despite the strong shaking, no earthquake-related injuries or major damage were reported, the Humboldt County Office of Emergency Services said in an advisory Thursday at 8:30 p.m. Additionally, damage assessments are underway across the county. Dr. Stephen DeLong, a geologist at the Earthquake Science Center at the USGS, explained at a news conference that this was because the earthquake was a “largely horizontal movement,” meaning the two faults slipped past each other. He added that the earthquake occurred offshore and was not particularly strong.
