Vinnie Sunseri is leaving the UW defense for a new job due to high turnover

The University of Washington’s football defensive unit continues to undergo rapid change, with safeties coach Vinnie Sunseri being named the new defensive coordinator for Conference USA’s Jacksonville State on Thursday.

The 33-year-old Sunseri takes this job after spending just one season in Montlake on Jedd Fisch’s staff. Husky defensive coordinator Steve Belichick is expected to leave soon and join his father in some capacity at North Carolina.

The Huskies ended a 35-34 Sun Bowl loss to Louisville on New Year’s Eve by adding seven seniors on defense, with an eighth, redshirt freshman Jordan Shaw, announcing Wednesday that he would enter the transfer portal.

After El Paso, the Huskies will likely have to replace two of their five defensive coaches and all but three of their 11 starters on that unit.

Sunseri, who came to the UW after four seasons with Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots, will head to Florida and join Jacksonville State’s new coaching staff led by Charles Kelly, who replaced Rich Rodriguez after he headed the Gamecocks West had left Virginia.

Kelly was formerly a defensive coordinator and safeties coach at Auburn. With Sunseri playing his college ball at Alabama, it’s no surprise that these two have or have made a connection.

Jacksonville State, which went 9-5 last season and lost to Ohio 30-27 in the StaffDNA Cure Bowl in Orlando, Fla., on Dec. 20, was one of four schools that joined Conference USA before last season Liberty, New Mexico State and Sam Houston are each moving up from the FCS to the FBS level.

Sunseri comes from a coaching family and gets his new job three weeks after his older brother Tino left Indiana’s co-offensive coordinator position to take the UCLA OC position.
