Fashionistas are desperate to get their hands on a “Walmart Birkin,” also known as a “Wirkin,” after discovering the budget retailer is selling handbags seemingly inspired by the pricey Hermès handbags.

Authentic Birkin bags — popular with A-list celebrities and extremely hard to come by — cost a pretty penny, with prices estimated from $9,000 at a Hermès boutique to hundreds of thousands at resale and auctions.

At Walmart, a convincing scammer will cost you less than $100.

“(For) $80 you can pretend you have a Birkin,” a content creator named Kristi said in a viral video posted this month in which she praised her new emerald-colored handbag.

“I mean, everyone will probably know that’s not the case, because who the hell has money for a real Birkin?”

Cheekily nicknamed “Walmès,” several versions of the “Wirkin” are available on Walmart’s website. One style costs $78 to $102 depending on size, but has become so popular that it has sold out online – and sparked an online debate.

TikTokers flocked to the retail chain to snag one – or more – of the now-viral handbags. Hundreds of unpacking and moving videos were posted under the tag “#walmartbirkin.” Meanwhile, critics of the seemingly unattainable handbag are celebrating what they see as the demise of the ultra-rich status symbol.

One creator praised the Walmart bag for making “a Birkin bag tacky” or uncool, while another said it embodies the “eat the rich” mantra because the once-coveted handbag is suddenly available en masse – albeit as an imitation.

“A bag shouldn’t cost more than a house,” one user commented online. “I’m here for the Walmart Birkin bag.”

“The Walmart Birkin bag is called Wirkin and it’s for the Wirkin class,” another quipped.

“Rich people everywhere will be throwing away their Birkins now,” wrote another. “Once an impostor becomes available, which is acceptable, it devalues ​​their item. I’m all for it.”

But not everyone agreed.

Luxury lovers expressed outrage over the fake bags, claiming that the craze for the dupe promotes fast fashion and represents a “complete disregard” for the craftsmanship and artistry required to hand-make an authentic Birkin bag by one of the designers Labels are sewn together in two dozen ateliers in France.

“It makes me smile that this is a – diabolical – marketing idea that could only come from marketing-obsessed people,” he told CBS News. “But we don’t have a marketing department at Hermès.”

“Whatever we have, we put it on the shelf and it goes away,” he added.

He explained that the manufacturing process is slower as the bags are carefully handcrafted by trained artisans and hence they cannot keep up with the huge demand.

However, he noted that it is not impossible for someone to purchase a Birkin as long as they have the means and a little patience.

“It’s going to happen at some point,” he said.
