Warriors News: Steph Curry doesn’t panic despite 51-point loss to the Grizzlies

In today’s Dub Hub:

After opening the season 12-3, the Golden State Warriors are now 2-9 in their last 11 games. That downward spiral reached a new low on Thursday night when the Memphis Grizzlies suffered a humiliating 51-point loss to the Warriors, 144-93. While Stephen Curry acknowledges the need for urgency, the Warriors leader insists the team is not panicking.

The game was one of the most memorable performances of Curry’s illustrious career. He failed to make a field goal for the first time in a game in which he played at least 12 minutes and finished the night with just two points – all from free throws – on a dismal 0-of-7 shooting night.

Still, Curry remains optimistic. The Warriors superstar is confident the team will get back on track and show they are much better than their performance on Thursday.

Curry and Green held without a field goal; Grizzlies defeat Warriors | ESPN

Frustrated by foul trouble, the 13-year veteran was a shocking minus-42 and Curry was a minus-41.

“First time for anything, right?” Curry said. “I never thought that would be a situation or an outcome of the game. From the first moment they basically hit us in the mouth. We had no answer.

“…That was kind of embarrassing.”

Draymond Green’s protocols weren’t much help either. Kerr brought him back into the starting lineup ahead of Jonathan Kuminga, who has started the last six games, as he looked to restore his defensive identity after the Mavericks put up 143 points on them on Sunday. Green was ineffective early on, committing four fouls in 10 minutes in the first half. He went scoreless, had four turnovers and the Warriors scored 42 points in his 19 minutes.

The 51-point margin represents the Warriors’ fourth worst loss ever, both away and overall. And if Brandin Podziemski hadn’t made a last-second layup at the final buzzer, it would have been their second-worst loss.

Additionally, Thursday’s defeat marked the worst loss by any team in the 2024-25 NBA season.

However, if there is a bright side for Golden State, this wasn’t even the worst loss of 2024; The Boston Celtics’ 52-point victory in March secures that honor.

Wemby’s poster jam and 42-point performance give Spurs OT win | ESPN

Wembanyama threw an alley-oop of his own off the backboard for a two-handed poster jam that left his teammates in awe long after the final buzzer.

“Sometimes you just feel it,” Wembanyama said of the freelance nature of the piece. “I think the way we read their coverage was good, and the good spacing to leave space on the isos (was good). I think it was a combination of things. There’s no one answer, but the fact that we’ve adapted to the different types of defenses (the teams that play) is what I’m talking about.”

Karl-Anthony Towns welcomed his return to Minnesota: “I’m an avid Timberwolves fan” | The athlete

But from an offensive standpoint, Towns was great: He averaged 24.8 points, led the league with 13.9 rebounds and shot 52.6 percent from the field and 44 percent from 3-point land. Moving back to center after playing two seasons as a power forward alongside Rudy Gobert was an offensive boon for both him and the Knicks.

“We used to call it the cheat code,” Wolves coach Chris Finch said of Towns playing center. “It’s just a cheat code for major attacks. His ability to score at all levels, stretch the field and all those things, that is definitely, definitely, definitely a driver for a great offense.”

Player Ratings: Warriors vs. Grizzlies

Dennis Schröder

22 minutes, 5 points, 2 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 turnovers, 2 fouls, 2-for-12 shooting, 0-for-4 three-pointers, 1-for-2 free throws, 19.4% TS, -34

Schröder’s debut with the Warriors didn’t quite go according to plan. He couldn’t find a rhythm on offense and while he made a few nice plays on offense to show off his quarterback skills, he was also one of their worst turnover offenders.

Maybe he was just trying to fit in with his new team by copying what they were doing.
