Washington needs to restore its running game against Atlanta

The Washington Commanders will look to secure their 11th win of the season against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday night. Kirk Cousins was the expected matchup that Commanders fans were looking forward to. Unfortunately for Cousins, too many turnovers and too few wins landed him on the bench after the Falcons’ win over the Las Vegas Raiders.

This is a high-stakes matchup with two rookie quarterbacks, Jayden Daniels and Michael Penix, trying to lead their team to a playoff spot. Commanders still have areas that need improvement; Running back Brian Robinson Jr. and Washington’s running game were stagnant for an extended period of time. In five of the last six games, the Commanders’ running backs have averaged 19 carries for 58 yards. The only exception where the Commanders’ running backs didn’t average three yards per carry was against the Tennessee Titans defense, where they rushed for over 200 yards. Daniels has been the leading player in recent weeks, mostly in tackles, which is unsustainable in the long term.

On Sunday, Washington will need to reassert its identity against Atlanta if it wants to have a legitimate shot at making the playoffs. The running game issues are not a one-group problem; The offensive line struggled to win at the point of attack. Their ability to get back to the way they used to at the start of the season isn’t going in the right direction as the defense has started to adjust to them. Offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury is very aware of the issue and alludes to the issue being primarily a player-related issue. But can they change things this week?
