How many teams are participating in the 2024 College Football Playoff?

This is the first year of the 12-team format for the CFP, with four first-round and four quarterfinal games added to the CFP roster.

How does the College Football Playoff format work?

The top four conference champions will receive a first-round bye, while seeds 5-8 will host first-round games in December. The fifth-place conference champion also receives a CFP spot. The seeds will be announced based on their final CFP rankings when the final rankings are announced on December 8th.

NOTE: The top four conference champions do not necessarily all belong to the “Power 4” conferences.

A tip: It’s possible, if not likely, that the top four spots won’t be in the same order as the final CFP rankings. For example, if Penn State is ranked No. 3 in the final rankings but doesn’t win the Big Ten, it can’t be ranked higher than No. 5.
