COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) – Temperatures will remain below average the rest of this week as we watch for the possibility of a wintry mix through Friday evening.

• Cold with sunshine midway through this week.

Summary of the first warning

The high air pressure today ensures that the sky is full of sunshine and we can thaw out. Highs this afternoon will be in the mid to upper 40s.

If you thought this morning was cold, our mornings later this week are going to be even COLDER. On Wednesday and Thursday we wake up with temperatures around minus 20 degrees. Luckily, despite the high pressure, sunshine continues to shine. This will help highs reach the mid and upper 40s.

On Friday, a low pressure system forming in the Gulf of Mexico will move southeast. The type of precipitation depends on the direction of this low. As this low moves further north, we will have mostly cold rain across South Carolina, with brief periods of transition to wintry mix farther north. The further south this low remains, the greater the chance of frozen precipitation Friday night

Most models are consistent with a low in our region. At the moment they differ on the track. We can tell you that there is a greater chance that we will get precipitation, but we can’t tell you what type it will be yet.

First alarm forecast

Today: Sky full of sunshine. Highs will be in the mid to upper 40s.

Tonight: Clear and cold. Lows will fall into the low 20s.

Wednesday: The sunshine continues. Highs in the upper 40s.

Thursday: More sunshine. Highs in the mid 40s.

Friday (first alert weather day): Cloudy skies followed by isolated showers in the afternoon. I’m keeping an eye out for a chance of a wintry mix on Friday evening. Chance of rain 60%. Maximum temperatures around 40 degrees.

Saturday (first alert weather day): A few showers in the morning with a slight chance of a lingering wintry mix. Chance of rain 40%. In the afternoon the sky partly clears. Highs in the mid 40s.

Sunday: Mostly sunny. Maximum temperatures around 50 degrees.
