Jan. 15 (UPI) — Tiger Woods admitted his Jupiter Links team was “boating” in its debut in the TGL, the technical golf league he founded with Rory McIlroy. Collin Morikawa’s Los Angeles Golf Club won 12-1.

Woods played alongside Max Homa and Kevin Kisner at Jupiter Links Golf Club in the new league’s second event on Tuesday at the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Morikawa teamed up with Justin Rose and Sahith Theegala.

“We were entertaining,” Woods told reporters. “We made a lot of shots. I think the people there saw how bad professionals can be. It was just a boat race, oh my God.”

“But we had a great time.”

Celebrities in attendance included tennis legend Serena Williams and her husband Alexi Ohanian, who owns LAGC. Woods’ son Charlie also watched – and sometimes laughed – as his father made several missed shots – including one into a virtual water hazard on the second hole of the 15-hole game.

Woods entered the facility shrouded in artificial, red-lit fog as Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger” blared over the speakers, drawing applause from the crowd in the 1,500-seat facility.

The event began in a triple format, with teams playing nine holes. Players from both teams alternated shots during this round. Jupiter Links threw “the hammer” on this hole, allowing the throwing team to score two points if they win. But both teams scored evenly, with Woods and Rose making the fourth and final throw.

LAFC took the lead with a bogey on hole No. 2, Jupiter Links conceded the hole. LAFC then scored two points each on holes Nos. 3 and 4 to take a 5-0 lead. Woods’ team eventually earned a point on hole No. 6, but did not score again. LAFC won hole No. 8 and picked up two more points on No. 9 for an 8-1 lead.

LAFC then won four of six individual games and ended the losing streak. Woods reached a draw in the first match, played on a 616-yard par 5 called Serpent. Morikawa then beat Kisner at No. 11.

Homa and Theegala shared hole No. 12. Rose beat Woods on No. 13. Morikawa and Theegala then claimed victories over Kisner and Homa respectively to secure the decisive victory.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, US soccer legend Alex Morgan and former NFL star Brand Marshall were among the other notable guests in attendance at Woods’ TGL debut.

With the win, LAGC secured two points in the SoFi Cup standings, sharing first place with Bay Golf Club. TBGC, which includes Ludvig Aberg, Wyndham Clark, Min Woo Lee and Shane Lowry, defeated New York Golf Club 9-2 in the first TGL game on Jan. 7 in Palm Beach Gardens. Matt Fitzpatrick, Rickie Fowler, Xander Schauffele and Cameron Young make up the NYGC squad.

NYGC (0-1) will face Atlanta Drive Golf Club (0-0) in its next TGL game on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. EST at SoFi Center. The meeting will be broadcast on ESPN and streamed on ESPN+. The ADGC squad includes Justin Thomas, Patrick Cantlay, Billy Horschel and Lucas Glover.

Woods and JLGC (0-1) will play McIlroy and Boston Common Golf (0-0) in their second game on Jan. 27 at 6:30 p.m. in Palm Beach Gardens. The BCG squad also includes Hideki Matsuyama, Adam Scott and Keegan Bradley.

Each of the league’s six teams plays each other once during the regular season. The top four teams with the most points from the regular season advance to the playoffs, which is a single-elimination tournament. The winners of these matches will play in a best-of-three series for the title.
