President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, will appear before the Senate today for his confirmation hearing.

Hegseth has been under scrutiny since Trump announced the veteran and former Fox News media pundit as his pick for Defense Department chief. Hegseth’s nomination caused a stir on Capitol Hill due to numerous allegations about his personal and professional life, according to reports in the Wall Street Journal. Hegseth has been accused of sexual assault, and a whistleblower report alleged that the combat veteran was expelled from nonprofit groups for personal misconduct, mismanagement of funds and workplace drunkenness, USA TODAY reported.

All of that is expected to be the focus when Hegseth faces tough questions from Senate Democrats on Capitol Hill Tuesday morning.

“Big character questions have been raised about his conduct that need to be considered,” Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island, the ranking Democrat on the Armed Services Committee — who will chair Tuesday’s hearing — said in an interview with USA TODAY .

Hegseth has stated in recent interviews that he is a changed man: “I’m a different man than I was years ago, and that’s a story of redemption that I think a lot of Americans can appreciate.”

Who is Pete Hegseth?

Hegseth is a conservative media pundit who was nominated last month for the role of defense secretary under Trump. When Hegseth learned of his nomination, he left his role at Fox News, where he had worked since 2014.

In a statement announcing Hegseth’s nomination, Trump noted his unorthodox candidate’s service as an Army veteran and his belief that Hegseth could fill one of the top positions in American government.
