We get an Okami 2, with Hideki Kamiya at the helm

Capcom is working on a sequel to Okami, the wonderful 2006 Zelda-esque film in which you play a sun goddess in the body of a wolf who roams a world of ink and parchment. It is co-developed by M-TWO Inc, Machine Head Works Inc and CLOVERS Inc and directed by original Okami game director Hideki Kamiya. My heart is red, I tell you that. You can find a trailer below.

There’s not much to reveal at this point – the game doesn’t even have an official title – but we do have a little blurb from Capcom. Here it is: “Okami is a game critically acclaimed for its unique world, heartwarming story, and exciting adventures. Now a new Okami-style adventure has been set in motion.”

The trailer deviates from the original game’s Sumi-e-inspired graphics – it’s more colorful and, er, hairier. Maybe a little too crowded for comfort, next to the crowded but clear scrollwork of the first part. But there are many familiar sights: the goddess Amaterasu herself galloping through green fields, the spinning reflector bowl on her back, and the celestial brush that cheekily falls into view at the end.

I wasn’t expecting a new Okami game in 2024. (I wasn’t expecting a new Onimusha either. Good job, Capcom.) The first is perhaps less surprising in retrospect – it’s messy in a way that Zelda isn’t, with some clunky action-RPG elements and some repetitive fights. But my goodness, it has tons of vision, heart and imagination. I still play the intro movie every now and then to cheer myself up. I never got around to playing Ōkamiden, the Nintendo DS spin-off. Maybe it’s time to change that.

It’s something of a homecoming for Kamiya, who left Capcom in 2006 to co-found PlatinumGames. Last year he left Platinum to become independent, commenting that he would “continue to create in my Hideki Kamiya way.” He’s been hinting at ideas for an Okami sequel for years.
