Weather in Houston: Strong to severe storms are possible on Thursday

Thursday is a FOX 26 Storm Alert day as we could see heavy rain, lightning and even some hail and damaging winds from late Thursday morning into this evening.

What we know: There is a risk of severe weather across the Houston area today.

The National Weather Service classified the area as “slightly at risk” for severe weather prospects. That’s a 2 out of 5 on the NWS scale.

Severe weather means the risk of hail, damaging winds, more than an inch of rain and a shot at a single tornado.

Timeline: The day started with fog and occasional drizzle.

Thunderstorms are expected to develop late this morning.

These storms will increase in intensity during the middle of the day through early afternoon.

By 4:00 p.m. we expect conditions west of Houston to improve, and by 6:30 p.m. most storms should occur outside of Houston.

What we don’t know: The exact timing of the storms could change as they move through the area.

Once we get through today, there’s a chance of some fog this evening and tomorrow looks pretty calm. There’s a slight chance of showers early in the day on Saturday, followed by a calm spell to end 2024 and start 2025 on a cool note, with New Year’s Eve temperatures likely to be in the 40s.
