Weather warnings and flood warnings are in place for the West Midlands and Shropshire following the icy weekend

The Met Office forecast for the area says there will be “an icy start in places” this morning, with early rain and snow clearing by the afternoon.

Scattered wintry showers will continue, along with a bitter north-westerly wind. Further wintry showers and icy periods are possible overnight, particularly in northern counties.

In between there are occasional clear periods where a patchy rural frost is possible.

However, commuters are urged to prepare for snow showers, ice and rain as the area is under a yellow rain warning and some areas are under a snow and ice warning.

Deputy chief forecaster Mike Silverstone said: “The low pressure that was causing snow and heavy rain in the south will move eastwards by Monday. This will allow a cold northerly flow to re-establish itself for much of next week.

“This will bring further sleet, snow and hail showers particularly across the north of Scotland, but possibly also in some other areas, particularly near the west coast, where there will be quite a bit of dry and bright weather elsewhere.”

“Temperatures will remain below average, with widespread frost and the risk of ice at times. Some areas, particularly in the north, may struggle to get above freezing for several days.”

Further weather warnings could be issued as southern and central England and Wales could see some snow around midweek, Mr Silverstone added.

Further travel disruption is expected due to the adverse conditions, including flooding from heavy rain and thawing snow, the Met Office said, with more than 60 flood warnings and 260 flood warnings issued across the UK.

The Environment Agency said a combination of snowmelt and rain could lead to “significant river flooding” in areas of Shropshire on Monday. People are advised to stay away from swelling rivers and not to drive through floodwaters.

There are currently two flood warnings in Shropshire including Brimfield Brook in Orleton and Brimfield and River Teme in Stanford Bridge where flooding is expected. But the Environment Agency has also set up 17 warnings about possible flooding.

There are 12 flood warnings in place across the West Midlands including: Illey Brook, Lutley Gutter and River Stour in Halesowen, River Stour in Stourbridge, River Tame in Hamstead and Finham Brook in Kenilworth. There are a further 18 warnings where flooding is possible.
