Weekend showers, some ice too – Boston News, Weather, Sports

Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. We’re in for another really nice day today, but that’s going to change this weekend. This Friday we have lots of sunshine again and temperatures rise to almost 40° – this is normal for the end of December. With the sun and temperatures above freezing, we’ll see more snow melting today, but what’s left will have flared and disappeared by early next week.

Clouds will increase this evening as rain showers begin over the weekend. I want to emphasize that the forecast for the weekend is NOT a shower and there will be many dry hours, but I think there will be a few passing showers on both Saturday and Sunday. Keep this in mind when you are out and about and maybe take the umbrella with you to be prepared. Tonight and early Saturday morning, these showers could manifest as light freezing rain or freezing drizzle with temperatures below freezing. This could make travel very difficult this evening and Saturday morning. So keep that in mind if you have travel plans tomorrow. Because of this, a winter weather advisory has been issued for areas north and west of 128.

Temperatures will be warmer over the weekend, especially on Sunday. We’ll still have temperatures around 40° on Saturday, but since there will be a lot more clouds than the last few days, it probably won’t feel quite as nice.

Both Saturday and Sunday may see some passing showers, as previously mentioned, but while both will see rainfall, there will be no washouts either. Freezing rain or freezing drizzle is also possible Saturday morning, followed by a few passing showers in the afternoon. There will be more of the same on Sunday, but with warmer temperatures we take the threat of freezing rain out of the mix.

On Sunday, it’s really difficult to pick a number that will represent everything to within a few degrees, and besides, it will change drastically depending on the time of day. As the day progresses, warmer air flows from south to north. So this is a snapshot of the afternoon numbers. Note the wide temperature range from north to south. Not only is it a large area geographically, it is difficult to pinpoint the timing of the high temperatures because when the rain begins late Sunday, it will continue to pull warmer air north. So it’s not the high temperatures per se because I think we’ll continue to rise throughout the evening and into the night. The majority of the rain will fall through Sunday night and Monday morning.
