Weekend Update’s Colin Jost and Michael Che trade jokes

Saturday Night LiveThe Weekend Update covered the extradition of murder suspect Luigi Mangione to New York City, an upcoming House Ethics Committee report on former Congressman Matt Gaetz, and felon George Santos’ new podcast. Co-hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che also conducted their annual banter exchange – with the topics becoming increasingly personal.

After describing Mangione’s return to the city where he allegedly shot the CEO of United Healthcare, Jost said, “In related news, Bumble exploded.”

Mangione is in the same prison as rapper and alleged sex trafficker Diddy. Che also alluded to Mangione’s appearance and the online attention surrounding it, joking, “Diddy said, ‘Mmm, Christmas came early.'”

Che then morphed into Gaetz, whose appointment as attorney general went down in flames over allegations – which he denies – of having sex with minors and sex trafficking. A House Ethics Committee report addressing the matter is expected to be released in the next few days after weeks of uncertainty.

“Gaetz says he’s just glad his girlfriend is too young to read the news,” Che joked, marking weeks of age-related digs at the ex-congressman.

Jost then addressed a few words to another scandal-plagued former Republican lawmaker who also faced an ethics report on Capitol Hill: convicted fraudster George Santos.

Mention of Santos’ podcast: Pants on fireJost quipped, “You can download the first episode for free just by entering your full Social Security number.”

Since it was the last Weekend Update of the year, Jost and Che ended the segment by staying true to tradition and reading jokes that the other had written for them. Some topics were personal, with Jost’s wife Scarlett Johansson appearing shocked backstage at one point.

Jost also had to read his lines in “Black Voice” – something Che really enjoyed.
